Blower Door & Envelope Testing
Whole-building and unit-level air leakage measurement to quantify uncontrolled infiltration.
Performed by certified DET Verifiers, envelope testing pressurizes and depressurizes a building or dwelling unit with calibrated fans to measure the air leakage rate. The result quantifies uncontrolled infiltration and exfiltration and shows whether the assembly meets the leakage limit set by code, program, or specification.
Typical Scope
- Single- and multi-fan setups for whole-building or unit-by-unit testing
- CFM50, ACH50, and leakage-per-area results normalized to the tested boundary
- Guarded and unguarded compartmentalization testing for multifamily
- Leakage pathway walk-through at test pressure to locate significant sources
- Pre-drywall diagnostic testing when corrections are still practical
Deliverable
Measured leakage rates with test configuration, boundary definition, correction factors, and photographs of noted leakage locations.
Where It Applies
Multifamily compartmentalization, code compliance, energy programs, and owner quality assurance.
Standards & References
- ASTM E779 / ASTM E3158 whole-building air leakage testing
- ASTM E1827 and RESNET/ANSI multifamily compartmentalization protocols
- IECC and local energy code air barrier leakage limits
Reporting & Documentation
- Measured CFM50, ACH50, and leakage per envelope area
- Test configuration, boundary description, and correction factors
- Photo documentation of leakage locations with retest results
